A bit of history...
The control of lipid levels (cholesterol and its subfractions and triglycerides) is one of the bases in the fight against cardiovascular morbidity, the leading mortality factor in the world.

The importance of this regulation has led to the massive prescription of effective drugs: Statins.
These act on the main source of cholesterol in the body: its hepatic synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme responsible: HMG-CO reductase, they thus cause a decrease in total cholesterol, an increase in the HDL fraction (good cholesterol) and a decrease in the LDL fraction (bad cholesterol).
On the other hand, they have a weak action on triglycerides. Their effectiveness is recognized, even if they can cause side effects (liver or muscle, infrequent but real). Many studies have shown that policosanol (rice extract) also acts on liver synthesis with an efficacy at least equal to statins.
Gugulipid (extracted from the resin of a shrub "commiphora mukul") is a plant traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for its action on obesity and cholesterol. It also acts on the synthesis of cholesterol and has a clear action on triglycerides.
Policosanol and gugulipid would also have antiplatelet activity and antioxidant properties. No side effects could be demonstrated. The effective dose of policosanol is, according to studies, 40 to 80 mg per day.
